10 Reasons to Try Reiki Today: How Reiki Can Benefit Your Mind, Body & Spirit

In today’s fast-paced, high-pressure world, it has become increasingly important to prioritise self-care for your body, mind, and spirit.

One way to do this is by visiting a Reiki practitioner. Reiki is a non-invasive alternative therapy that harmonises the energy system in the body.

In this article, we’ll walk you through 10 reasons to try Reiki therapy.

How Does Reiki Work?

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is an energy-based healing modality based on the belief that your body is a source of life force energy, or “Qi” that flows through channels known as meridians.

During Reiki, the practitioner lays hands just above or on the body in different positions to gently open energy channels and remove blockages. Balancing your energy field may take strain off your body, allowing your innate healing ability to thrive.

10 Reasons to Try Reiki Today

Looking for reasons to add Reiki to your healing or self-care routine?

Here are 10 reasons why we think you should try Reiki therapy.

10 Reasons to Try Reiki Today

1. Reiki is an ancient healing art

Reiki healing is not some trendy therapy that’s here today and gone tomorrow.

Based on the principles of Eastern medicine, Reiki has evolved over many years into the healing art it is today. In fact, it’s been around since the early 20th century when a Buddhist monk developed a system of hand positions to channel the body’s life force energy and promote healing.

2. Reiki is gentle and suitable for all ages

Reiki takes place in a quiet, relaxing environment. Practitioners don’t normally touch you, instead placing their hands above different energy meridians on your body to channel energy. In some cases, light touch is involved if you consent.

The gentle nature of the therapy makes it suitable for people of all ages and backgrounds. It’s even safe for pregnant women, babies, and animals!

3. Reiki is non-invasive, and you stay clothed

You wear your clothes at all times during a Reiki treatment. The practitioner will make you feel as comfortable as possible, covering you with a blanket if needed as you lie on a massage table during a 60–90-minute appointment.

4. Can be done in person or through distance healing

Many Reiki practitioners offer both in-person and distance healing sessions.

During a distance session, the practitioner may tune into your energy field via Zoom, the phone, or while holding a picture of you. While in-person sessions are preferred, distance healing is convenient if there isn’t a practitioner nearby.

5. Available in a variety of settings

In addition to private practice, in-person Reiki may be available in spas, clinics, hospitals, hospices, drug rehabilitation centres, and care homes. In many cases, it’s free or discounted for cancer patients to improve their quality of life and relaxation.

6. Can be used in conjunction with other treatments

Reiki is a complementary therapy that’s safe and supportive to use alongside other alternative and conventional treatments. It may even enhance the effectiveness of other treatments by stimulating your relaxation response.

That said, it’s not a replacement for conventional medicine and cannot cure any conditions. Reiki is simply a catalyst for healing.

7. May speed up healing after an injury

Reiki therapy is ideal for healing after surgery or a physical injury by supporting circulation, pain relief, and reducing inflammation. This makes Reiki therapy popular among athletes and exercise enthusiasts.

8. Supports mental, emotional, and spiritual health

Reiki therapy supports healing on a mental, emotional, and spiritual level. Many people use it to resolve emotional traumas or blockages that keep them stuck in anger, fear, or sadness.

It’s also wonderful for maintaining your overall health as part of a self-care routine. The more your body is in a calm “rest and digest” state, the more centred and at ease you’ll feel. This positively affects every aspect of your life.

9. Qualified Reiki practitioners abide by a code of ethics

Reiki is an unregulated therapy in the UK. However, voluntary professional bodies exist to control and regulate the practice. A properly trained Reiki practitioner should be a member of a professional organisation and adhere to a code of ethics.

Here are some reputable professional organisations:

  • The UK Reiki Federation
  • The Reiki Association
  • Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council
  • International Association of Reiki Professional

10. Reiki treats the whole person

Reiki is a holistic therapy that addresses health from all angles. Practitioners endeavour to understand your lifestyle choices, emotional state, and other factors.

Reiki practitioners also teach clients about the Usui Reiki Principles for a happier life:

  1. Just for today, do not worry.
  2. Just for today, do not anger.
  3. Honour your parents, teachers, and elders.
  4. Earn your living honestly.
  5. Show gratitude for everything.
